Isla Angel de la Guardia

From Isla Coronados we continued north towards Isla Angel de la Guardia (Guardian Angel Island). The colors and layering of the mountains were spectacular:


We found a nice anchorage on the north coast of Isla Angel de la Guardia. The island is not inhabited but has huge colonies of birds. Here's a curious pelican swimming by the boat:

We went on a short hike on the island and found a pelican rookery with hundreds of baby pelicans hiding under the cacti all over the hill:

We had to cut the hike short and retreat to the beach to avoid upsetting all the birds but were able to get a picture of a few young pelican hiding in the shade of a cactus.

After several days watching the birds and breaching whales in the distance and listening to the oink-oink from a nearby sea lion colony, we hoisted anchor and went down the eastern side of the island, again with a view of the dry sides of the mountains:


We saw several large whales that day:

We are pretty sure they are not humpback whales but rather something quite a bit larger, probably blue whales:
